Is it "1996 style"? Well, I prefer it to others out there. Lotsa reasons:

1) No screaming ads;
2) No avatars that could make you think the person who picked it is a total schmuck to choose an avatar that looks like it belongs on a biker jacket or in a teenager's video game ... and so you just respond to the writer's ideas, not their "image";
3) Easy to follow the conversations for those of us who are easily confused by a zillion ongoing threads and responses;
4) Nice simple classic design, so it doesn't feel cheesy or tabloid-y, which means that ...
5) you could actually pull it up at work and it doesn't scream "time wasting!" (Hey, it's not time wasting. It's an ARCHIVE. It's "universal access to all knowledge," right?)

You make some good points.
I guess I'm pre-1996 myself, 'cus I still have trouble figuring out what people are replying to sometimes. If I actually care to figure it out (which is not usually), I sometimes actually put my finger on the screen and scroll up and down to figure out what posts are in reply to what. It's very confusing that sometimes things posted later appear on top of things that were posted earlier. If you're participating at the time, it makes sense, but you can't make much sense of it later.

Yeah, that's one thing I'd change. It would be nice if later posts were, say, last in the thread. They seem to mix and match depending on mood or the stars. "If it's Tuesday and the moon is in Pisces, it must be a Last Post First Day!"

Thank you for the amusing mental image!

I don't mind the antique style on this site. It's perfectly suited for an "archive." My favorite point made by AltheaRose is that you can view this site in a professional setting and nobody will question you unless they actually see what nonsense is sometimes written on the boards!

Right ... unless some enormous scary picture pops up, psychdelic dancing bears or skulls and roses or Bob in short shorts ...
